A leading national law firm based in London is looking to recruit a Business Development Manager to join their team on a part time basis of 3 days. Within this role you will be expected to improve the firm’s capability by acting as the internal consultant and coach lawyers carrying out the BD activity. This will report to the Marketing Director.


The Responsibilities:


  • Introduce robust BD processes where they do not exist already, measurable through increased fee income, and ensure their adoption by lawyers in order to achieve effective activity
  • Develop and evolve existing processes in consultation with the BD team to continuously improve their effectiveness
  • Ensure that reporting of activity is consistent and disciplined across all teams and generates robust management information
  • Establish a reputation within the lawyer group as a “go to” expert in BD and the leader in any legal team’s group discussions on BD
  • Using that position of leadership drive increased BD activity and adherence to best practice within pursuit, client account, practice area and sectoral development teams.  Ensuring that meetings take place at required frequency to generate activity and ultimately results
  • Take ownership of the pursuits to ensure that any pursuit is executed professionally through management of the lawyers involved. Maintain control of and manage next steps in each process
  • Develop junior members of the BD team through training, exposure to and involvement in BD coaching and management at the appropriate level in addition to delegation of administrative and BD management tasks as appropriate
  • Ensure that the firm’s branding and presentation guidelines are enforced and adhered to in any presentational or pitch documentation
  • Where appropriate to provide intensive coaching and support to individual lawyers in order to improve their BD skills and effectiveness
  • On an ongoing basis identify areas where coaching would be appropriate within teams of lawyers identified above and to coach them to improve their BD effectiveness
  • On an ongoing basis coaching the junior members of the team in order to support and facilitate their development within their roles


The Candidate:


  • Track record in Business Development and experience coaching senior level staff
  • Proven experience in a professional services environment preferably legal
  • Excellent organisational, time management and project management ability
  • Ability to be assertive, to influence and work closely with a demanding internal audience to achieve results under time pressures
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to enable effective relationships to be developed with a wide range of professional and support staff
